How ban waves work, and why Linux players should care

Some anti-cheats ban in delayed batches. That matters if you are running a game in a setup the developer never approved.

A ban wave is a batch of bans issued at once, often some time after the cheating was detected.

Why delay bans?

If a cheater is banned the moment a detection triggers, the cheat's developers learn exactly what was caught and can work around it. Delaying bans and issuing them in waves makes that harder. Valve's VAC is the best-known system that bans in delayed batches.

What we track

The "Ban waves tracked" counter on the news page counts articles in this category. Specific ban waves will be added as they are reported with a source. If you know of one, use the report button on the affected game's page.
